URS plays an important role in managing government-run nuclear and hazardous waste facilities, developing sophisticated remediation technologies, and engineering design solutions to clean up contaminated sites. We provide the safe, innovative management of high-risk, technically complex projects, programmes and facilities for the U.K. Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and other government agencies.

Our services at these facilities range from overall programme management, technical consulting and engineering design to construction and construction management, operations and maintenance and decommissioning.  We also provide environmental impact assessments, permitting and regulatory compliance and remedial design.

The URS-led consortium, Nuclear Management Partners, Ltd. (NMP), is responsible for the management and operations of the Sellafield sites in North West England on behalf of the NDA. This includes commercial operations, waste management, support services, decontamination and decommissioning and new construction projects. Sellafield is one of the largest and most complex nuclear sites in the United Kingdom, storing and treating nuclear waste from both the UK's military and civil nuclear programmes.

Our work includes safely managing former U.S. nuclear sites, cleaning up the chemical/radioactive legacy of a half century of Cold War activity, and developing and applying technology for tasks ranging from environmental remediation to homeland security. We also help manage government laboratories across the United States.

We have strong nuclear sector design capabilities in civil and structural engineering, including seismic analysis and design, nuclear process engineering and human factors consultancy. Our engineering design teams have supported Sellafield and other complex nuclear sites for over 30 years. During this period, we have been responsible for the design of many major facilities associated with fuel manufacture and reprocessing, decommissioning and active waste storage. This extensive expertise and experience across the nuclear sector ensures that we have teams of suitably qualified and experienced engineers, technicians, architects and specialists who are ready for the challenge of the new build nuclear renaissance.
