
URS is one of the foremost international engineering consultancy firms in the hydropower sector, with a pedigree of projects extending back more than 85 years, including engineering, design and construction supervision for the Lunsemfwa hydropower project in Zambia in 1926.
We provide lifecycle services for dams and hydroelectric generating facilities—from planning and permitting to design and construction. We also undertake inspections and maintenance, refurbishment and upgrading services. Our in-house expertise encompasses all the disciplines required for the development of hydropower projects, including surveying; environmental, economic and financial studies; and the training/technology transfer to counterpart staff of our clients.
Our global experience encompasses the full range of climatic conditions on all five continents. We have provided services for surface and underground facilities on schemes ranging in size from hundreds of kilowatts, to some of the largest projects in the world with installed capacities of more than 10,000 megawatts. Projects we have engineered include dams approaching 300 metres high and generating heads in the range from three metres to more than 1,000 metres.
